Walter Janvier, Vice President

Walter Janvier is a Chipewyan Prairie First Nation (CPFN) member from Fort McMurray, Alberta. He also owns a construction company, Prairie North Enterprises, which is located in Fort McMurray. Walter’s work history includes being the Chief for CPFN from 1983-2006. In his role as Chief, he settled land claims and traditional lands of CPFN. He also initiated the consultation process with the Government of Alberta, Canada, and the oil and gas and forest industry in the Fort McMurray area. Walter was instrumental in creating the Athabasca Tribal Council and Treaty 8 in 1985-1986. In 2001, Walter was the Chief who researched and implemented the Cows and Plows Settlement for western Canada, also known as agricultural benefits. This was a huge undertaking but well worth the time. Walter speaks fluent Dene, is a residential school survivor, and is a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His hobbies include learning the history of indigenous legends by sharing and listening with elders and other nations. Walter enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing and trapping. Walter is passionate about the indigenous issues, including homelessness, missing and murdered women and residential schools, including political topics involving Indigenous people.
