Walter Janvier - Director
Walter Janvier is a member of the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation by Fort McMurray, Alberta. Walter is the owner of a construction company, Prairie North Enterprises which is also located in Fort McMurray. Walter’s work history includes being Chief for CPFN from 1983-2006 his role as Chief was settling land claims and traditional lands of CPFN, also initiating the consultation process with the Government of Alberta, Canada and the oil and gas and forest industry in the Fort McMurray area.
Walter was instrumental in creating the Athabasca Tribal Council and Treaty 8 back in 1985-86. In 2001, Walter was the Chief who researched and implemented the Cows and Plows Settlement for western Canada also known as agricultural benefits. This was a huge undertaking but well worth the time. Walter speaks fluent Dene language, is a residential school survivor, a father, grandfather and great grandfather. His hobbies include learning the history of indigenous legends by sharing and listening with elders and other nations.
Walter enjoys the outdoors hunting, fishing and trapping. Walter is passionate about the indigenous issues including homelessness, missing and murdered women and residential schools including political issues involving Indigenous people.
